Welcome to fall quarter! I am honored and excited to serve as your new associate dean in math, science, and business. You can find additional information about me on my webpage. Important Information:
Logistics: If you have any logistical questions such as: accessing Instructor Briefcase (rosters), office needs, pay, etc., please contact Aimee.Goodwin@seattlecolleges.edu (Academic Transfer Program Manager).
Enrollment & Waitlists: Many of you will likely see robust enrollment in your classes, including longer wait lists than you may normally see. Please review the wait list Q&A information (attached). If there is room in your class (and no waitlist) on Monday morning (first day of the quarter), students can enroll in open slots through the fifth day of the quarter. If you have a wait list as of 11:59pm Sunday, September 24th, no student can add without your permission. IT IS CRITICAL that you keep track of students who want to enroll in your class if you have a wait list. It is your decision whether you want to enroll students over your class cap. Please do not enroll more than five students, and fewer if the classroom you are in does not hold more than the cap. CL Item Numbers & Merging Canvas Shells: If you notice additional item numbers in your Instructor Briefcase with CL noted in the section, those are career link students who are placed like all other students in your classes. They have separate item numbers because of funding sources. If you use Canvas (the Learning Management System used at South for online, hybrid and web enhanced instruction), you can request that your item numbers are merged so that these students will have access to Canvas as well.
Prerequisite/Placement Report Results: As of summer quarter, enrollment services (Joyce Allen) runs a report to determine correct placement into courses that require pre-requisites for the upcoming quarter. Joyce ran the report and sent the results a few weeks ago which looked at how students placed into fall quarter classes. This report pulls out any anomalies or errors in placement. If you had students enrolled in your class that did not place correctly, you would have been notified. If you weren’t notified, the students in your class are placed according to the placement and pre-requisite policies we have in place.
New Faculty Orientation Friday, September 29th 9:00-10:30am in the TLC: The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) is located at the South end of the library. If you are new to the college or haven’t been to an orientation in recent years, you are invited to participate in fall quarter’s faculty orientation next Friday. The orientation will reference the Faculty & Staff Resources page. Through the TLC, you can be trained to use Canvas and develop a course shell for your class. You have access to our fabulous Teaching and Learning Associates who are available to answer questions about course development and/or developing a Canvas shell for your class materials.

Course Syllabus: As you build your course syllabi, please reference the Syllabus template, which is attached here and also available on the Division Canvas site. Every quarter, faculty submit their syllabi in the Canvas shell. Please let me, Laura, or your faculty coordinator know if you would like sample syllabus from your area.
Student Enrollment Details: Be sure to read any emails from registration (Joyce Allen and/or Marilyn Anderson-Burt); these will be coming the first few days and weeks of the quarter. The communication includes important information and dates regarding student enrollment, deadlines for wait lists, adding/dropping classes, grades, etc.
Academic Programs Canvas Page: If you don’t already have access, you’ll soon receiving an email invitation (from Instructure) to access the Academic Program Division’s Canvas site. The Canvas site includes access to electronic forms (including an absence form to submit if you need to miss class), information about Division policies (Dean’s Memorandums), highlights about our faculty (Activities Journal) and other resources. You’ll see an email soon requesting that you submit your syllabus in Canvas.
Events and Announcements:
NSF grant writing workshop: UW Tacoma will be hosting an “NSF Day” grant writing workshop from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM on Friday, October 6. The workshop will be presented by Dr. Stephanie August of the National Science Foundation’s Division of Undergraduate Education. This will be a lively, hands-on workshop: attendees should bring grant ideas, and be open to opportunities for collaboration. Participation is free and a working lunch will be provided at no charge. More details about the “NSF Day” workshop and the link to online RSVP/registration are available on Office of Research home page. RSVPs are required and must be received by Friday, September 29.

I will have open drop-in office hours on most days. These will be announced on Mondays via my weekly update and posted on my webpage. If these hours don’t work for you, please feel free to simply stop by, e-mail, call, or make an Outlook appointment with me.
